Letter: The Tribune is part of the problem https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I’ve been an educator for 22 years, teaching language arts, journalism and science. Throughout that time, The Salt Lake Tribune has always been a reputable source for information, one I’ve relied on to foster a love for news, language, politics and above all meaningful conversation about diverse topics.

After Bagley’s posting of a cartoon representing a law enforcement officer with no heart, it was clear The Trib is part of the problem, a platform to foster hate and violence. When you’re in a position to be heard, be careful what you say. This one cartoon fostered a weeklong argument (not debate) among students at my school. It was like gasoline on a fire, and by the second day, the conversations were completely free of fact and logic, burning solely on emotion. To say it plainly, it divided our community even more than before.

I’m disgusted that something like this was printed. What’s next? A cartoon making light of the homeless, immigrants or teen pregnancy? Our country has problems, agreed, but promoting hate will not solve them. For me and many others, The Trib is no longer relevant.
