Letter: Skordas for attorney general https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Utahns, you have a choice for the state’s attorney general. I recommend Democrat Greg Skordas, a lifelong Utah resident who has worked both sides of the legal aisle as a prosecutor and defense attorney. He was Utah’s first gang prosecutor who was instrumental in creating the Serious Youth Offender Act, which allowed prosecutors to bring serious charges against gang offenders.

Skordas helped start drug courts in Utah, which have graduated thousands of drug court participants. He worked with his wife Rebecca, a lawyer in his firm, to start a Utah nonprofit called “Friends of Drug Court,” an addiction recovery program.

Skordas has taught law classes at the police academy, among other places, and was a volunteer speaker in my high school law classes years ago. He was named Pro Bono Attorney of the Year by the Utah State Bar in 2017.

Skordas said he is running for Utah attorney general because he has “watched three consecutive state attorneys general openly engage in a pay-to-play policy.” He said Utah deserves an A.G. who “will focus on Utah, not spend all his time sucking up to the White House,” referring to current A.G. Sean Reyes.

Tribune columnist Robert Gehrke said Reyes' performance in office has been disappointing. Reyes has opposed and wanted to gut the Affordable Care Act and has been against giving LGBTQ Americans federal protection against discrimination. He attended an indoor Trump rally in Arizona in September without a mask on.

In short, please vote for Greg Skordas, who will serve us proud as Utah attorney general.

Marty Bernstein, Midvale
