It’s easy to get riled up about Sen. Mitch McConnell announcing he would hold a vote on a Trump nominee for the Supreme Court before Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s body was even cold. But the problem is not Republicans stealing something from Democrats in 2020, it is that this proves unilaterally that they stole something in 2016.
There should be no damning of Sen. Mitt Romney backing the choice to vote. He is a Republican senator who in an election year has the right to vote on a candidate from the president. He did not stand up and desperately claim that “America’s voice matters” or that “The people should decide,” as many senators did. I believe this is an example of Mitt, again, voting his conscience.
As for the other senators who were vocal in 2016, when you claim America’s voice matters, you are saying today that it doesn’t. It’s now clearer than ever before that 2016 showed us that the Republican senators have no interest in America’s voice and are more concerned about doing whatever it takes to score a win for your team. The unfortunate part of this is that it will lead to dirtier politics on both sides.
Just don’t forget the issue here: Nothing is being stolen from anyone today. It was stolen four years ago and today only proves that.
