Salt Lake and Davis county homeowners and renters who suffered uninsured losses due to damage incurred from the magnitude 5.7 earthquake originating near Magna on March 18 may be eligible for federal disaster assistance, per a joint news release from the Utah Division of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
“FEMA has programs that provide financial help with temporary housing expenses, basic home repairs and other essential disaster-related needs,” the release notes.
Potential applicants are advised to first contact their insurance companies and file claims for disaster-related coverage, if they have not done so already. Damage clean-up can take place, but photos and/or videos of the damage should be taken first. Also, keep receipts for any and all repair work.
People who still have uninsured or underinsured losses are then encouraged to register with FEMA for free.
Applicants can do so by downloading the FEMA app; by visiting DisasterAssitance.gov and clicking the “Apply Online” button; or by calling (toll free) 1-800-621-3362 (or 1-800-462-7585 for hearing-impaired people). Multilingual operators are available every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. MDT.
Low-interest SBA loans also may be available for businesses and residents. Information is available online at www.SBA.gov.disaster; by calling 1-800-659-2955 (1-800-877-8339 for hearing-impaired people); or by emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.
When registering, applicants are encouraged to have available the address of the structure where the damage occurred; current mailing address; current phone number; insurance information; total household annual income; checking/savings account numbers and routing numbers; and a description of the disaster-caused damage and losses.
Applicants should note that FEMA personnel are working remotely until further notice, and that inspections of the damaged dwellings may take place remotely.
