Millcreek Canyon is being evacuation because of a wildfire burning nearby.
The evacuation announcement came just before 7:30 p.m., about an hour and half after people first reported seeing smoke plumes rising near 3400 S. Crestwood Drive, a residential area just north of the mouth of the canyon near Interstate 215.
The fire has been named the Crestwood Fire.
At first, officials said no evacuations were needed because the fire was spreading away from homes, but changed their minds a few minutes after that announcement.

Unified police, who also responded to the fire, said the canyon evacuation was a precaution in case the fire heads toward the canyon. Police said if that happened, anyone in the canyon would be trapped there.
The canyon is also closed to uphill traffic.
As of the evacuation announcement, the fire had burned between 8 to 10 acres.
